The Idrija and Cerklje areas are famous for their rich cultural heritage, but one tradition stands out in particular: the creation of lace, an activity that requires a great deal of knowledge and needlework skills. Today, the tradition is being kept alive with events such as the Idrija Lace festival. Dominating over the old town, Idrija’s castle has preserved its historical name, Gewerkenegg, which in German means mine castle. It was built in the period from 1522-1533 for the needs of the mercury mine. Today, the castle is used for museum activities and the music school.
